2022.01.19 14:41 drkleppe Magic system as an inventory system
Magic systems are fundamentally resource management systems, so I decided to model it similar to my inventory system, because I liked how it works.
If you want a to see my video on this, check it out here: https://youtu.be/6aseaR4AKMc
The main goal of any resource management system is to link importance to cost. An example of how to not do it is the inventory system in D&D, where the importance is varied (damage output, magic ability) and the cost is weight. A component pouch weighs 5 lbs, and gives a wizard the ability to cast spells and be combat effective, while a fighter requires a full plate armor, shield and weapon (75lbs-ish) to also be combat effective. The importance is the same to both characters, but the cost is different.
Anyways, back to my magic system:
Casting a Spell Spells have a cost from 1-11. I don't have any specific spells yet. In fact I want them to be free within limits. Roll a die (between d4 and d12, explained later). If the result is higher than the cost, you succeed. If you roll equal to or lower, you fail. You still manage to cast the spell, but suffer a consequence.
An example will be that a generic "damage spell" costs 4, and depending on if you want range, area of effect, etc, the cost increase and decrease. And it can be a fireball, a lighting bolt or a rainbow beam. That doesn't matter.
Resource Management You have a component pouch with six slots. Each slot can have one of three types of components: - Ingredients: A mix of random stuff; snails, dried mushrooms, sap from a dead tree. Player creativity is encouraged. One slot with ingredients gives a d4 magic die. Two slots give a d6, three slots give d8, four d10, and five or more give a d12 magic die. You roll your magic die against the cost to cast the spell. If you fail, you lose an ingredient (a slot with ingredients). - Class-specific: Here the mechanics change depending on what class the character is. Some are versatile all-rounders, others are focused heavy hitters. I'll explain some ideas later. - Artifacts: Special magical components that have unique abilities. It's just like magic items, but in your component pouch.
One thing I like about this is that ingredients can be foraged easily to be replenish. Class-specific components depends on the class. Some classes have powerful spells that replenish slower, while others are faster and more versatile. Artifacts are setting specific and can be given as a reward. This makes it so you must constantly decide what you need and don't need in your pouch.
The other thing I like is that slots can be traded. You can't trade class-specific components unless you are the same class, but someone who is low on ingredients can get some from someone who has too many (or artifacts). This makes it so that it's not only interesting to you which components you have, but also your teammates.
This system also makes players want to change the components frequently, depending on what circumstances they will encounter in the future. It's like prepared spells in D&D, but you're free to choose spells on the fly. Do you want to two or five ingredients today? Or maybe your class-specific components are more valuable. Do you want many weak spells or a few heavy hitting spells? My goal is for players to frequently interact with their component pouch.
Class-specific Components I haven't developed any classes yet, but here are some ideas on what mechanics can be used: - Focused ingredients: Same as ingredients, but have a free attribute attached (such as range, area of effect, speed, etc). I am picturing a witch class that has a ton of ingredients and constantly mixing them into powerful spells. Free attributes and many ingredients means a lot of versatility and cheap spells. - Runes: Each rune their own magic die and only cast spells within a "genre", like fire spells or darkness spells. Because of this, you can cast fire spells without worrying about losing ingredients or other runes. But runes are harder to craft and to replenish the magic die. I imagine a rune smith that throws their sword with a fire rune on a bonfire to replenish it. They are more focused on specialized heavy hitting spells. - Other ideas: Spells can build up over time like a ritual. The longer time you spend on casting, the lower the cost of the spell, which means that you can cast spells that cost 52, but spend a year to cast it. You can also reward specific behaviors by making replenishing class-specific components by doing the thing you want. Like a "rage mage" which wants empty slots. As you go into "rage mode", an empty slots is filled with a "rage component" every round, which can be spent on spells. And components are lost whenever you leave "rage mode". Another idea is totems. Passive abilities or buffs that you can apply without rolling dice. Good thing is that they're safe to use without risk of losing them, consequence is that they take up a slot. Again. There's really no limit to what a class-specific component can do.
So what do you think? Check out my video if you want a (slightly different and) more visual explanation.
